Jake Carr looks to continue meteoric rise against Renold Quinlan

IN a generation where padded records and undeserved title shots are common place, Jake Carr is eager to be the exception to the rule.

The undefeated Australian super middleweight champion earned his position the hard way – dethroning the dangerous and equally avoided Serge Yannick last July – and has looked to take on all comers since.

That attitude has lead him to a further two title defenses, in the shape of impressive one-sided wins over Zac Awad and Dane Mulivai respectively, as well as his third title defense tonight against undefeated Indigenous prospect Renold Quinlan (8-0, 4 KOs).

With a mentality that is lost in the flood of regional titles, Carr is typically focused and refuses to look past his most recent challenge in Quinlan, despite the fact he is a heavy favourite to retain his title.

“At the moment all I am focused on is Renold Quinlan,” said Carr in an exclusive interview with Aus-Boxing. “It’s the biggest fight of my career and I’m ready.”

“But I do believe that I will have the ability to fight and beat any of the super middleweights in Australia and I am looking forward to doing so. ”

Carr, 23, has found difficulty securing regular opponents and he is a firm believer in proving yourself domestically before looking abroad.

The fight against Quinlan, 25, albeit twice rescheduled, will be Carr’s first under the managerial guidance of Garrie Francisco and Bill Treacy, the men behind Grange Old School Boxing.

Having expertly guided Daniel Geale, tonight’s headliner, to multiple world titles as well as lucrative fights abroad, Carr is not understating the role they will play in future fights.

“Their role will be very important,” said Carr on his working relationship with Grange. “It’s very important to have a very good management team behind you to get you the right fights and the best fights.”

“It’s huge fighting on such a high profile card, I’m pumped,”

In many ways, Carr (8-0, 3 KOs) is a man of few words who in true workmanlike fashion, likes to do his talking in the ring. When pressed on his desire to continually seek out the biggest challenges available, the Newport-based prospect’s response was fitting.

“I think it’s the best way to go about your career,” said Carr on his thoughts of his record and mentality to fighting. “Fighting the best fighters available is the way I have chosen to take my career,”

While his career is still in it’s infancy, it doesn’t much to understand that Carr is willing to do whatever it takes to prove himself.

And that he has and then some.
