Will Tomlinson signs for Francisco Vargas, March 12th in Texas
WILL Tomlinson will look to move towards the pinnacle of the super featherweight division when he faces unbeaten Mexican Francisco Vargas on March 12th in San Antonio, Texas.
Having campaigned in the US for the best part of twelve months, Tomlinson, 28, has finally put pen to paper in what is undoubtedly the biggest fight of his professional career.
Vargas, 30, a former Mexican Olympian, represents the biggest hurdle between Tomlinson and potential stardom in the US. As well as holding mandatory status by both the WBC and WBO as a super featherweight, Vargas is also the holder of the NABF and WBO International titles.
“It’s a relief to finally sign for this fight,” said Tomlinson in an exclusive interview with Aus-Boxing. “This is without a doubt the biggest fight of my career.”
“I made the move to the US to fight against the biggest names in the division and a win against Francisco Vargas will put me in a very good position to secure even bigger fights in 2015,”
“It was good to spend time back at home in Melbourne with my friends and family over the New Year,” Tomlinson added. “But I’m back in Los Angeles and it’s strictly business now. My team really pushed to make this fight eventuate and I will forward to showing the boxing world what I have to offer,”
Vargas had an active twelve months, fighting three times and securing wins over former world champion Juan Manuel Lopez and Abner Cotto, before closing out 2014 with a routine stoppage over Genaro Camargo in Mexico.
Tomlinson and Vargas share one common opponent in Jerry Belmontes. Vargas scored a shutout decision over Belmontes in 2013, who went on to give Tomlinson his lone blemish in 2014.
Although the full details of the bout are yet to be released, it appears likely that the fight will be televised on an arm of cable network giant HBO.
