Frank Warren on Chisora vs. Browne: “It’s got to stack up”

ICONIC British promoter Frank Warren hasn’t ruled out making a herculean heavyweight tussle between former world title challenger Dereck Chisora and Australia’s leading heavyweight Lucas Browne.

In a recent interview with iFilm London, Warren, 63, briefly discussed his previous interest in the fight, which was allegedly offered to Browne’s management last year.

“We made an offer through an agent, that was quite a while ago, well over a year,” explained Warren.

“And that’s a good fight,”

“At that time, Derek was flying. He was ranked number one then, he’s not ranked number one now – if Lucas Browne wants it and we can agree terms – that’d be a great fight for September,”

“It’s got to stack up,”

Browne, 36, has flirted with the idea of facing Chisora, 31, ahead of his looming heavyweight title challenge against Ruslan Chagaev, which has been held up due to legal issues surrounding former opponent Fres Oquendo.

Chisora (now 21-5, 14 KOs) returned to action last month, dispatching an overmatched Beqa Lobjanidze in a singular round, breaking an eight month layoff following his loss to Tyson Fury last November.

As potential fights with fellow Britons Anthony Joshua and Dillian Whyte amongst others appearing unlikely in the near future, a fight against the WBA #3 rated Browne could be a fast track to another title tilt for Chisora.

While Warren made no mention of any further discussions, he was quick to highlight Chisora’s past willingness to challenge himself against fellow title contenders.

“Derek Chisora has been in with Klitschko, Helenius, Fury and nearly every top fighter. Other than his fight last week, everyone he has fought has been in the top ten,”

“So I’m certain he’s not worried about fighting Lucas Browne or anybody,”

Browne (22-0, 19 KOs) will end a nine month hiatus next week, when he defends his WBA Inter-Coninental bauble against Gonzalo Omar Basile in Melbourne.
