Australian boxers hold peaceful Black Lives Matter protest in Sydney

EIGHT Australian boxers from different eras stood together for the sake of equality.

Earlier today, former WBC super middleweight titleholder Sakio Bika was flanked by the likes of former IBF titleholders Billy Dib and Gairy St Clair as part of a peaceful Black Lives Matter protest on the steps of the Sydney Opera House.

The peaceful protest was arranged in a bid to highlight the racial injustice faced by Indigenous Australians, as well as the recent black deaths both domestically and abroad.

“I’m very proud to have organised and taken part in today’s peaceful Black Lives Matter protest at the steps of the Sydney Opera House,” said Bika in a media statement.

“As an African man living in Australia and fighting in the USA, I am constantly aware of the racial inequality that pollutes our world.

“Thank you to my boxing brothers for protesting with me today and to Ben Damon for ensuring our voices were heard.”

Other participants, including former world title challenger Bilal Akkawy, wore alternating t-shirts with the message ‘I Can’t Breathe’ and ‘Hands Up’ marked on the front.

The peaceful vigil is the latest display of solidarity for George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter international human rights movement.
