Ben Damon talks Tszyu against ‘excitement machine’ Brubaker
A stand-out year for Tim Tszyu could end with an exclamation mark, after signing to meet fan-friendly slugger Jack Brubaker on December 6th.
The regional title fight will see Tszyu (14-0, 10 KOs) defend his pair of WBO and IBF affiliated light middleweight crowns in a third consecutive pay-per-view headliner for No Limit Boxing, and for the second successive time at ICC Sydney.
As the fight was officially unveiled at the Tszyu Boxing Academy in Rockdale on Thursday morning, potential viewers should take the fan-friendly clash as a gift for their engagement according to leading broadcaster, Ben Damon.
“In his first two Main Event headline performances we have already seen that Tim Tszyu is world class,” Damon told Aus-Boxing.
“He clearly outboxed the Australian champion then dominated the world’s ninth ranked super welterweight. For a 24-year-old, who had a limited amateur career and has now had just 14 professional fights, Tim’s progress has been remarkable.”
Noting the rapid improvement from Tszyu’s national title scalp over Joel Camilleri, to his most recent performance against Dwight Rithcie, Damon admits the unbeaten Sydney resident has gone from strength to strength.
“We’ve seen Tim’s boxing ability improve in recent fights, his maturity and patience has accelerated dramatically,” he added.
“Tim’s punching power, that was evident from his early fights, continues to strengthen, ensuring a compelling boxing spectacle each outing.
“After a whirlwind 2019 so far, where Tim has firmly made his case as the next superstar of Australian boxing, the decision was made to pay tribute to Tim’s growing fanbase who have been so supportive of his pay-per-view journey so far, by matching Tim against Australia’s most entertaining fighter.”
Brubaker (16-2-2, 8 KOs) has fast developed a reputation as one of Australia’s most entertaining fighters, earning notoriety for his scraps against the likes of Commonwealth titleholder Kris George, slick Englishman Tyrone Nurse, and more recently, Ty Telford.
Now under the guidance of Jeff Fenech, the 27-year-old will look to replicate the form that saw him capture the coveted OPBF welterweight title in Japan against favoured veteran Suyon Takayama in 2016.
Recapping his most recent run of fights – including consecutive appearances on Tszyu’s undercards – Damon expects more of the same from the heavy-handed Cronulla native.
“This fight is an early Christmas present as Jack Brubaker is an entertainment machine,” he explained.
“His fight with Ty Telford on Main Event in May is a run-away leader as the fight of the year – that’s a fight that needs to be seen to be believed – which you can relive it on the Main Event Facebook page.
“Jack’s latest battle with Danny Kennedy in August was heading the same way before Kennedy was cut. He puts it all on the line for the fans every single time and this bout has all the ingredients to be a classic.
