Daniel Dawson signs for lucrative bout against Austin Trout
SECOND chances on boxing’s big stage are highly unlikely, unless your name is Daniel Dawson.
Perth’s Dawson, 36, has been given an unlikely second chance to make a statement in the lucrative American market, signing an agreement that will see him face off against former WBA light middleweight champion Austin ‘No Doubt’ Trout.
Team Trout, headed by Trout’s trainer Louie Burke made the announcement earlier today with an alleged July 19th date on Showtime Sports. However, our sources are saying it is more likely to take place on the final weekend of July or in early August.
The card, which will be promoted by Golden Boy Promotions, is set to also feature Australia’s Sakio Bika, who will defend his WBC super middleweight title against Mayweather Promotions’ J’Leon Love.
Dawson was last seen on American shores in 2010, where he was halted in ten rounds by then undefeated WBO light middleweight champion Serhiy Dzinziruk, also televised on Showtime Sports. Dawson went on to lose his next fight to fellow Australian Frank LoPorto – but has been on an impressive run since – going 6-0-1, on a run that has seen him go almost four years without a loss.
Trout, 28, gained notoriety in 2012 when he became the first boxer to defeat future Hall-of-Famer Miguel Cotto at the iconic Madison Square Garden. However, Trout is winless since that remarkable upset, going 0-2 in his fights following in admirable efforts against Canelo Alvarez and Erislandy Lara – who are set to collide in July.
At this point, the fight appears to serve as an eliminator for the WBA light middleweight title as both Trout (26-2, 14 KOs) and Dawson (40-3-1, 26 KOs) hold lofty ratings within the organisation.
Trout currently holds a WBA #7 world rating and Dawson is currently rated WBA #13.
