Daniel Lewis seeks double over ‘cash cow’ Tszyu
DANIEL Lewis is the last fighter to have beaten Tim Tszyu.
Almost a decade removed from their last meeting as amateurs at the Australian Youth National Championships in 2011, Lewis (6-1, 4 KOs) has entered the Tszyu sweepstakes, declaring his interest in a potential clash this year.
Speaking with The Daily Telegraph, the 26-year-old Lewis has offered to forfeit his purse in an attempt to persuade Tszyu (16-0, 12 KOs) into a mouth-watering trilogy, having split two previous meetings with headgear.
“Tim can be the cash cow,” Lewis told Phil Rothfield.
“I don’t want any money. He can have it all. I just want the opportunity because I know I can beat him again.
“I’ll knock him out. I beat him clearly last time.”
Tszyu, 25, shot to mainstream prominence last month, defeating former welterweight titleholder Jeff Horn (20-3-1, 13 KOs) across eight rounds to solidify his place as Australia’s leading pugilist in Townsville.
Despite the significance and one-sided nature of Tszyu’s signature win, Lewis, who last fought on the Wilder-Fury pay-per-view in Las Vegas last February, puts little weight on his rival’s most recent display.
“Tim looked good beating Horn, but Jeff had an off night,” he explained.
“I think back to the day I beat him a lot. It was special. I don’t know if he’s scared. Probably, but he’s always a bit emotionless.”
Having captured the national title in just his third professional bout, a fight between the highly-touted pair would be about more than compensation or status, according to Lewis’ manager Peter Mitrevski Jr.
“It’s not about the money,” added Mitrevski.
“We just want to show Daniel can beat him again. Daniel will be the first legitimate fighter that he’s fought.
“He’ll knock him out.”
