David Browne Jr on maturity, career goals and domestic rivals

FOR as long as he has competed, David Browne Jr has always been considered a top draw prospect.

A near decade long professional career brought Browne an Australian title, a handful of regional belts and a world rating to boot.

However, just over four years ago, Browne Jr (20-1-1, 6 KOs) took a break from the sport. In that time, Browne got married, started a family and prepared a future for himself outside of the squared circle.

Now rejuvenated and with a renewed outlook on competing, Browne Jr, now 28, has his sights set on a super featherweight world title.

“Since my last fight, I have been keeping busy both in and out of the gym,” said Browne Jr in an exclusive interview with Aus-Boxing. “If I’m not training I’m spending as much time with my family I can,”

“My wife and I had our second baby in Febuary, so that’s taken up a lot of my time,”

Since his return in December 2013, Browne Jr has steadily rebuilt himself towards a regional title and an eventual world rating. He returned with a second round knockout over veteran Thongthai Rajanondh, before racking up a further wins over twelve months.

Despite his outlook and future prospects looking quite good, there was once a time where Browne Jr looked unlikely to glove up again.

“I decided to take a twelve month break from the sport to settle down and concentrate on myself and where I wanted to go in life,” Browne Jr explained.

“After about eight months, I met a special girl in Melbourne. We started dating and that then led to a child and getting married. We also bought a house together.”

“In that time, almost five years had passed between fights, but I always knew I was ready,”

On Saturday night at the Whitlam Leisure Centre in Liverpool, Browne Jr will make the first defence of his recently acquired WBC Eurasia Pacific Boxing Council super featherweight title against Thailand’s Denkamon Pakdee Gym.

While Browne Jr. doesn’t know much about his opponent, he is expected a solid test from the equally experienced Pakdee Gym.

“I don’t know to much about my next opponent,” added Browne. “I know that he’s a tough international boy who is a southpaw and has twenty two wins, with thirteen by knockout,”

“One thing I do know is that my preparation leading into this bout has been really good, but come Saturday night, he is going to know I mean business,”

Browne Jr’s return has come at a good time. The super featherweight division is thriving domestically and Browne Jr. now finds himself alongside half a dozen genuinely talented locals, all looking for potential world title fights.

Although Browne Jr. doesn’t make the decision on who he ultimately fights, he believes that he is more than capable of matching it with the countries best.

“I have accomplished a lot as a fighter – both professionally and as an amateur – but I have a few goals that I want to achieve before I retire, and that’s a world title to my name.”

“The super featherweight division in Australia is the best it has looked in years,” said Browne Jr in closing. “But I know my own ability and I believe I can mix it with any of these guys,”

“I’ll fight anyone my management wants me to fight,”
