Five for 2019: Tapia vs. Copland
FOR the plethora of key prospects currently plying their trade, a big win goes a long way.
And while intent is often misplaced with ability, there are instances where application and timing go hand-in-hand.
Unbeaten pair Mateo Tapia and Adam Copland are still early in their respective professional journeys, but appear on the verge of meeting in what would be a can’t-miss attraction.
What we think:
In just over two years in the paid ranks, the 21-year-old Tapia (8-0, 5 KOs) has shown glimpses of immense potential.
The fast rise of the Mexican-born firebrand was signalled last August when Tapia took the unbeaten scalp of Isaac Buckley for state title honours at Australian Technology Park as part of the televised Dib-Farmer undercard.
Tapia already boasts the rate feat of having taken two unblemished records, also marking the first blemish on Sudanese native Fano Kori last February.
Unlike his interstate counterpart, the 23-year-old Copland (4-0, 2 KOs) hasn’t had the opportunity to secure a marquee win as a professional.
The opportunity initially arose in December, where Brisbane-based firm DDP Sports secured the services of hard-hitting Kiwi Mose Aumatagi Jnr (11-1-2, 7 KOs).
The fight was scrapped at the final hurdle when Aumatagi withdrew himself shortly after arriving in Australia.

“This one might seems a little left field, but Tapia is perhaps the most exciting prospect in the country.
“After eight fights his team say they’re willing to put him in with just about anyone. But Copland is not just anyone,’The Candyman’ is undefeated, classy and was a late withdrawal away from facing the vastly more experienced Mose Aumatagi Jnr last month.
“These are two fighters who just want to fight, so it’s time for some phone calls to be made, and for this hugely exciting clash to be put together.”
