George Kambosos recaps successful Pacquiao camp
IF success is a product of its environment, George Kambosos is well-placed for future glory.
The unbeaten lightweight has spent a second training camp in succession alongside legendary future Hall of Famer Manny Pacquiao in the Philippines, helping the Filipino icon and eight-division titleholder prepare for his looming date with WBA welterweight titleholder Lucas Matthysse.
The quality of Kambosos’ work as a sparring partner has granted the Sydney resident a spot on Pacquiao’s undercard.
Kambosos (14-0, 8 KOs) will face an unknown quantity in former IBF affiliated regional titleholder JR ‘Starboy’ Magboo over eight heats on the untelevised prelims in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
As expected, the highly regarded prospect speaks positively about his second offering abroad.
“Being in with the all time great Manny Pacquiao has taken my fight game once again to another level,” said Kambosos.
“We have prepared extremely hard and have left no stone unturned. I’m doing all the one percenters with Pacquiao that are needed for successful world title camps. Two camps with Pacquiao has me primed and ready not only to destroy Magboo, but for my world title camps in the very near future.”
Despite Magboo (17-1-2, 8 KOs) being an unknown commodity, the 25-year-old believes that another camp under the guidance of head-trainer Justin Fortune will pay dividends at the Axiata Arena.
“I’m feeling extremely fresh, focused and excited on fight week,” he added.
“I’ve had an A+ training camp, sparred over sixty rounds with Manny. I’m focused on getting the job done in impressive fashion.”
Having signed with established New York-based promotional firm DiBella Entertainment, Kambosos knows that a statement needs to be made as he works his way towards an eventual run at a lightweight championship.
“It is extremely important I make a huge statement as I do every fight,” he concluded. “Because one fight on this stage will open even more doors,”
“We are so close to a world title that we cannot afford any slip ups in this fight.”
“I have had a world title preparation alongside Manny so there will be no slip-ups. They could put any of the lightweights in there and I’d be ready to conquer and destroy.”
