Jack Asis – “I have already said yes three times to fight Kye MacKenzie”
IN recent times, very few local fighters have raised their hand when the opportunity has arisen to fight undefeated super featherweight Kye MacKenzie.
However, WBA #15 world rated super featherweight Jack Asis has reached out to Aus-Boxing, stating that his team is deep in discussions to fight MacKenzie, who is guaranteed to be in one corner in a fight to determine the new owner of the vacant IBO super featherweight title.
“I have already said yes three times to fight Kye MacKenzie,” said Asis in an exclusive interview with Aus-Boxing. “But I continue to wait and everyday I don’t see a contract yet, maybe Kye don’t want this fight,”
“He is good fighter, so why not?” Asis asked.
“I think it will be good for the promoter too, because all Philippine people in Australia will come to this fight. I have big support now.”
Asis, 31, is currently riding an impressive twelve-fight unbeaten streak, notching wins over Brett William Smith and Josh King, while also scoring knockouts over credible imports Nestor Rocha and Ryusei Yoshida.
Having secured a world rating by the WBA in his most recent win – a second round knockout over Isaias Sampaio – Asis and his team are in discussions with not only MacKenzie, but several lucrative opportunities abroad.
The Filipino-born but Toowoomba-based Asis (32-18-5, 17 KOs) has been touted as a possible opponent for Costa Rica’s Bryan Vasquez, who holds the interim WBA super featherweight title, while former IBF super featherweight champion Mzonke Fana has also expressed interest in a possible fight against Asis.
The final decision will ultimately come down to Brendon Smith, who serves as Asis’ manager and trainer.
“We have a great partnership,” said Asis in closing. “We work very well together and he supports me one hundred per cent.”
“But I will fight all of them, they are all good fights,”
