Kyron Dryden out to prove legitimacy of boxing credentials
KYRON Dryden has plans to put the Australian boxing scene on notice.
The hard-hitting Novocastrian, known primarily for his antics as a social media entertainer, will look to legitimise his boxing credentials on May 24th, where he faces OPBF welterweight titleholder Ben Savva.
The fight will take place at The Star in Sydney as part of the third instalment of the hugely successful Johnny Lewis Boxing Series.
Dryden (10-1, 8 KOs), who will face his biggest test in a rescheduled bout with relocated Englishman Savva (8-1, 3 KOs), has unveiled his bold plan for a signature 2018 campaign.
If he is successful against Savva, Dryden has plans to challenge world-rated Irishman Darragh Foley and local rival Jack Brubaker, who will headline the event against two-time British titleholder Tyrone Nurse.
“I’m easily the biggest puncher in or around welterweight in Australia,” said Dryden in a press release issued by Bigticket Boxing. “I know Ben Savva is nervous. He didn’t show up last time and if he makes it to the sixth round of this fight then he will have done very, very well.”
“Once I knock him out I’m going to call out Darragh Foley, Jack Brubaker and the rest of them. We can start planning a date for me to knock them out as well.”
“People might think I’m a novelty because of my online presence, but that’s just a part of who I am.”
“It’s given me a bigger following than any other Australian boxer already. I might be a clown outside the ring – but I take this boxing very seriously – and it’s time to show people the real me this year.”
Dryden is co-trained by his father Joey and successful St Mary’s based mentor Lincoln Hudson, who admits he was disappointed when the bout was postponed from its initial date in March. Savva withdrew days from the event after suffering an eye issue.
“Obviously it was upsetting that Savva left it so late to pull out the last time,” added Hudson.
“We respect his team, so you have to take them at their word about the eye. They obviously believe he’s going to make it to the ring this time and we hope he does because Kyron is ready to go.”
“He’s been sparring much, much bigger guys like Kerry Foley and Reagan Dessaix. His power is more than holding up against them. This kid is something else.”
“We’ll chase down Savva, then bring them all on. He’s got the power to stop anyone even close to his weight in the sport.”
