Les Sherrington on Zac Dunn: “He looks like a very good young talent”
LES Sherrington sees a win over the undefeated Zac Dunn as his route back to the world scene.
The seasoned Gold Coast resident will face the hard-hitting Dunn (20-0, 16 KOs) on April 30th at the Melbourne Pavilion and will challenge the Melburnian for his recently acquired WBC International Silver bauble.
We caught up with Sherrington (35-8, 19 KOs) to discuss the looming fight as well as his last outing in Las Vegas.
“I got a call while I was training a girls class at a school, so I couldn’t answer,” said Sherrington to Aus-Boxing.
“But then I also got a text and I saw it about ten minutes before I finished with the girls,”
“So I knew about it from then, as well as my decision about the fight,”
Dunn was slated to face Aliaksandr Sushchyts, but when the Belarusian was unable to get a visa – Sherrington stepped in – making him only the second Australian to face Dunn in twenty professional fights.
Despite the short notice, Sherrington didn’t hesitate when the opportunity was presented to him.
“My first take on it was one hundred percent, yes. I didn’t want to wait around for a fight to happen for another six to twelve months. So I called the wife and we spoke about it, and the deal was done the next day.”
“Since I’ve gotten word of the fight, I have been training as hard as ever with my trainer Luke Meldon from Fortitude Boxing. He also comes down to the gym I train out of on the Gold Coast, 350 Fitness in Miami.”
“I will be having Luke Meldon, Steve Deller and Clayton Collyer in my corner down in Melbourne.”
The 33-year-old hasn’t fought since falling inside five rounds to American prospect Antonine Douglas last November in Las Vegas. With that in mind, Sherrington is aiming to silence critics with a signature performance.
“My last fight was against in Antoine Douglas over in Las Vegas, it still leaves a sour taste in my mouth,” he added.
“It was a great experience – and even though I lost – I definitely learnt some very valuable lessons. A lot of things were against me, but those are the fights that I have been wanting.”
“My assessment of Zac Dunn is he looks like a very good young talent coming through and punches hard,” he continued. “He has a nice kit of punches and is very strong,”
Dunn is presently the only active Australian to hold ratings with all four major sanctioning bodies, falling inside the top ten for the WBC, WBO and IBF, giving Sherrington an extra incentive to score an upset, and take his spot.
“I see a win over Zac as a way to get myself back to where I should be,” he concluded.
“This is going to be a great fight and it is one that I am looking forward to.”
