Rocky Jerkic made mandatory for Commonwealth champion Liam Williams
ROCKY Jerkic has established himself as one of Australia’s most talented boxers.
After taking the Australian light middleweight title from reigning champion Shannon King in an epic battle on free-to-air television last year, Jerkic is now aiming for the Commonwealth title, held by Welshman Liam Williams.
“I am proud to be the Australian champion and want to defend the title multiple times this year,” said Jerkic.
Jerkic, 28, is scheduled to fight three times in the month of May, but none of them are domestic fighters.
“It is disappointing that other fighter have not challenged me for the title,” he continued.
“My team has publicly stated that we will fight any Australian fighter in my division – and we will travel anywhere to defend the title – but no one has taken the challenge. We have actively chased other rated fighters,”
“Most of the fighters that we have asked have declined or said they will fight later in the year,”
Earlier this month the Commonwealth Boxing Council made Jerkic the mandatory contender to their title.
“We are looking to purse the Commonwealth title and bring it back to Australia,” concluded Jerkic.
If the Indigenous ace was to win the title, he would follow in the footsteps of some great Australian-based fighters in his division, such as Troy Waters and the very first holder of the Commonwealth strap, Charkey Ramon.
