Sam Ah-See discusses US training camp, training experiences and more

LIKE so many fighters before him, Sam Ah-See has packed his bags and taken his unbeaten record abroad in the hope of securing bigger fights.

Ah-See, 23, made the lengthy trip abroad to the US last month, where he set up camp in both New York and Los Angeles, training at some of the premier gyms and alongside some elite world level fighters.

Speaking from his temporary Los Angeles base, where it appears he will spend the next two months, Ah-See believes all fighters dream of campaigning in the US at some point, whether it be short or long term.

“I think it’s a dream for any boxer to train in the US,” said Ah-See in an exclusive interview with Aus-Boxing. “For me personally, I just wanted to learn and get good sparring,”

While former world champions Sakio Bika and Billy Dib often end their training camps in the US, Will Tomlinson is the only elite level Australian boxer that is based in the US on a permanent basis. Ah-See (12-0-1, 6 KOs) spent time with the super featherweight contender and says he learnt plenty from the Melbournian.

“Being around Will has taught me to pick my game up,” Ah-See explained.

“He’s a walking definition of discipline and he trains ridiculously hard. It was an unreal experience and I soaked up every bit of knowledge I could from him, success leaves clues,”

Now training out of the Fortune Gym in Los Angeles, Ah-See has been able to witness a lot of high quality sparring and training, even taking part in the action himself. From what he saw first-hand, the Indigenous ace is under the impression that each gym offers their own unique experiences.

“I’ve been to a couple gyms in the US, I’ve been to a few in New York and a few around Los Angeles too,” Ah-See added. “I would have to say the sparring at Wild Card has a big difference in quality but you would expect that,”

“Everyone who goes to Wild Card is there to get noticed by Freddie Roach – so nobody goes there to get some rounds – they’re there to knock your head off. And that gets the best out of a fighter.”

Given the unpredictable nature of the boxing business, especially in a booming country like the US, Ah-See has no set time to return. However, given that he now has a fight set for next month, it appears, for the short term at least, that he will be calling Los Angeles home.

“Just as of today I have been given a date and its April 4th,” Ah-see said in closing. “I’m currently training under Justin Fortune so through his contacts I’ll be getting a fight,”

“An opponent hasn’t been announced yet but we will find out in a few days.”
