Daniel Geale vs. Renold Quinlan confirmed for June 24th
2015 wasn’t the best year for former unified middleweight champion Daniel Geale.
However, if things run according to schedule, Geale’s 2016 campaign could be much better.
Geale (31-4, 16 KOs) is slated make his debut as a fully fledged super middleweight on June 24th, when he faces promising super middleweight Renold Quinlan (10-1, 6 KOs) at West Leagues Club in Leumeah.
The pair will meet over twelve rounds for the vacant IBO super middleweight title, recently vacated by Zac Dunn.
Quinlan, 26, enjoyed a relatively successful 2015, competing twice while winning a pair of IBO and WBA affiliated regional baubles with comfortable stoppage wins over Ricardo Marcelo Ramallo and Michael Van Nimwegen.
Geale reigned as the IBF middleweight champion for two years, making four title defences. In the time that has passed since, Geale has dropped three of his past five fights with many questioning his desire to compete.
The 35-year-old has suffered uncharacteristic stoppage losses in two of his past three fights, albeit at the hands of future Hall of Famer Miguel Cotto and seemingly unstoppable lineal middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin.
His lack of conviction in both performances has prompted the move up in weight, which should beneficial.
The bout against Quinlan has been made to determine whether or not Geale has a future at world level. Despite his relative inexperience, Quinlan has shown an ability to be durable and does posses the power to cause an upset.
Quinlan’s lone career blemish came in 2014, when he dropped a razor-thin decision to Jake Carr in Sydney.
The only element of uncertainty is Quinlan’s looming test against talented Victorian Jayde Mitchell on April 30th.
Providing he defeats Mitchell (6-1, 3 KOs), Quinlan will then be free to face Geale in June.
