Tomlinson vs. Aguelo to headline Channel 9 card on July 8th

WILL Tomlinson will headline Channel Nine’s first foray into live domestic boxing in twenty five years when he faces hard-hitting Adones Aguelo in Melbourne on July 8th.

Tomlinson, 28, has campaigned in the US for the best part of two years, with his last Australian fight taking place in 2013 where he decisioned Malcolm Klassen in a thrilling IBO super featherweight title defence.

Although he is signed to Golden Boy Promotions, boxing’s biggest promoter, Tomlinson has been granted a one-fight exemption from his contract, where he still has one fight remaining of his five-fight deal.

The ten-round fight, which will be promoted by Brian Amatruda’s Big Time Boxing, will mark not only Tomlinson’s homecoming but also his return to the lightweight division, where he plans to campaign indefinitely.

Aguelo (24-11-2, 16 KOs) is a hard-nosed veteran based out of Mandaue City in the Philippines and is renowned for his forward-walking style and his ability to engage in lively scraps.

The orthodox fighter, 27, has engaged in several high-profile fights, including a compelling ten-round battle with WBC #5 rated Adrian Estrella and an exhilarating war with former WBC world title challenger Sergio Thompson.

Tomlinson (23-2-1, 13 KOs) last fought in March, losing in eight rounds to WBC/WBO #1 super featherweight Francisco Vargas in an unofficial eliminator for the WBC super featherweight title in Texas.

The winner of the fight – which will be for a yet to be confirmed regional title at lightweight – will catapult into a top fifteen world rating, serving as a springboard for high profile fights internationally.

“Will’s reputation as a genuine road warrior speaks for itself,” said the event promoter Brian Amatruda.

“It is a great privilege to promote his homecoming fight in Melbourne and the fans will be in for a treat,”

“Anyone who is familiar with the fighting style of both Will Tomlinson and his opponent Adones Aguelo will know that the free-to-air audience will be in for an absolute war,”

“Australian boxing hasn’t had a platform like this for decades, so what better way to reintroduce to them to our product then by showing them the fighting heart of one of Australia’s best,”

The fight between Tomlinson and Aguelo will be televised live across Australia, immediately after the third game of the highly anticipated State of Origin series, which will also be televised on Channel Nine.
