Aus-Boxing Awards 2016 – Performance of the Year: George Kambosos Jr
BOTH George Kambosos Jr and Brandon Ogilvie promised fireworks ahead of their mouth-watering collision last December.
But for all of his trash talk and bravado, it was the unbeaten and world rated George Kambosos Jr. who validated his claims of being the number one lightweight in Australia with a comprehensive twelve round decision over the highly touted Brandon Ogilvie at Sydney’s Luna Park.
Despite being seen by most industry insiders as the underdog, Kambosos showed maturity beyond his years, controlling the action with his clear advantage in hand speed and ring generalship. The Sydney resident used his immaculate counter-punching ability to time Ogilvie onto both his right-hand counter and lead uppercut with great success.
The standout win gave Kambosos the WBA Oceania lightweight bauble – previously owned by Ogilvie – and also the coveted Live Combat Sports Performance of the Year award.
“He’s a warrior, he gave me a hell of a fight,” said Kambosos in his post-fight interview. “To have two young guys like ourselves – the two best in Australia – to come up and fight each other, is something special. He didn’t have to fight me and I didn’t have to fight him.”
“It was a great fight and a lot of fun, the fans loved it. I told you from the start, all the haters that sat there and talked all this sh*t. I’m sitting here now, I have all the belts and I’m the number one lightweight in Australia.”
